Witchlings

The witch’s mana signature rolled over me, strong, fresh, and powerful. Excited, I followed the trail to a luxury apartment building, all curves, metal, and glass. A row of floor-to-ceiling windows faced the stand of trees and pampas grass growing on the raised walkway snaking through downtown, providing a view that gave the residents a little bit of countrified heaven. I arched a brow. From the looks of the building and the location, the witch was clearly a stinking rich one. I hadn’t expected her to be a socialite.

I left the walkway and took the stairs down to the street to inspect the building from all angles. From the myriad of scents bearing down on me, the witch wasn’t the only Charmed soul in the place. Capturing her might just prove a little trickier than I’d planned. Especially with all the technology bristling from every door and window. The cardkey readers, cameras and light sensors were just the obvious entry controls. Since the place was obviously under Charmed control, I knew there had to be even more gadgetry hanging around than the naked eye could see.

Crud. I obviously couldn’t just zip inside and wander through the halls, sniffing for the right door. I had to find another way.

Pretending to be a lost tourist, I pulled out my phone from my backpack and jabbed at the screen as if I were lost and trying to establish myself on the map. At the north entrance, I found her scent again, and judging from the strength of the mana drifting out an open window, she lived on the second floor facing the trees growing on the old elevated railway.

I returned to a bench on the walkway and settled back, still playacting a tourist soaking in the sun.

I had to get inside that building in order to retrieve her hair.

But how?

An hour later and still no closer to a viable plan, I decided to call it a day.

Exhaustion had returned. I was in no shape to take on even a witchling, let alone some high mucky-muck of a Fifth Order. I’d been running on near empty for far too long.

Frustrated, but knowing it was the right decision, I stalked towards Times Square, feeding along the way before finally getting a room at some random hotel.

I was practically asleep before I’d even dropped onto the bed.

* * *

It was almost noon when I finally left the hotel, restored and energized. I pushed my way through the crowded New York streets, formulating a plan to gain entry to the witch’s building. I didn’t have time to study the place to plan a foolproof break in, so that meant I had to enter through a door. And since I didn’t know the first thing about hacking a cardkey security system, I had to walk in legally.

There was only one way to accomplish that on such short notice. I had to play to my strengths, and that meant it was time to go shopping.

I had to dress to kill—or, in this case, dress to distract.
